Physical Geology 110 Section

Format:

This is an online course with 4 face to face meetings:

  1. Orientation meeting
  2. Mid-term exam
  3. Final exam
  4. Field trip to Fossil Canyon (optional)

The class will be using BlackBoard e-Education Platform throughout the course.  Download the Student Manual to help you use BlackBoard effectively.

Content:

Geology means "the study of Earth." Two broad areas of the science of geology are (1) physical geology, which examines the materials composing Earth and the processes that operate beneath and upon its surface; and (2) historical geology, which seeks to understand the origin of Earth and its development through time.  This course covers both areas.  Course content is identical to that of the on campus course.  See class syllabus for course outline

  • Volcanoes and other Igneous Activity
  • Glaciers and Glaciation
  • Earthquakes and Earth's Interior, Plate Tectonics
  • Geologic Time and more...

Accreditation:

San Diego State University recognizes and accepts this course as part of an articulation agreement. See the Assist Site for help in understanding which courses are recognized by various colleges and universities.   The Assist Site can help you understand the difference between a course that will transfer and one with an articulation agreement.  Geol111 is a lab and can be taken concurrently or at a later date.

This course will require:

  • Mandatory Orientation and final exam on campus
  • A computer with internet access (see "computer requirements" for details)
  • Email address
  • Participation in Blackboard, an e-Education platform for Grossmont - Cuyamaca Community College District
  • On campus mid-term and final exams

This course will not require:

  • Regular attendance in class on campus
  • Advanced computer skills
  • A hard copy of the text book (an online textbook is available as an option to the standard textbook.)

Required Text:

Essentials of Geology: Lutgens 10th Edition - CD/GEODe is required (hard copy or online version)

Forum Participation:

You will be required to participate in ongoing forum discussions within the BlackBoard portal. 10% of your grade is based on your participation and includes joining forum discussions and starting new topics.  You will not be graded on the number of posts you start or on the number of topics to which you reply.  You will be graded on the content of your posts, their meaningfulness and relevance to the course.  You will earn points throughout the semester for your participation.  Everything posted in the class forums is part of the required reading for this course.  Visit the forums often and share your opinions, questions, news, and answers with your  fellow classmates for maximum credit.  This is 10% of your grade that is totally in your control.
